Ford Explains Exit from Sedan Market: Lack of Profitability Key Reason

Since discontinuing the Fusion in 2020, Ford has ceased selling traditional sedans in the U.S., with iconic models like the Taurus, Fiesta, and Focus successively phased out—leaving only the Mustang. CEO Jim Farley told Automotive News that the retreat wasn’t due to insufficient demand, but rather because the company “couldn’t find a way to compete profitably.” Although Ford continues to sell a midsize sedan under the Taurus or Mondeo nameplate in markets like the Middle East and China, there are currently no plans to bring it back to North America. Farley emphasized that the company is shifting its focus toward “iconic vehicles” and is committed to developing more affordable, cost-effective models. Data shows that in 2025, several sedans from American, Japanese, and Korean brands—including the Camry, Corolla, and Sentra—are enjoying steady sales, underscoring ongoing market demand. Against a backdrop where the average new vehicle price has surpassed $50,000 and monthly payments reach as high as $748, Ford could potentially regain market share by introducing competitively priced sedans offering strong value.
