IIA was informed that Volkswagen and the Greek government have signed a memorandum of cooperation. The two parties will cooperate to make Astypalia Island in the Mediterranean a "demonstration island" with zero traffic emissions. Volkswagen will provide 1,000 electric vehicles on the island and build about 230 charging points.

Volkswagen plans to put 1,000 pure electric vehicles including the ID series on the island to replace the original 1,500 fuel vehicles on the island. Astypalaia has a population of approximately 1,300 and is visited by nearly 72,000 tourists every year. Volkswagen will also provide electric vehicles for public travel on the island, including electric scooters and electric buses under Volkswagen's SEAT.

Commercial vehicles on the island and public service vehicles such as police vehicles will gradually be replaced with pure electric vehicles. Volkswagen said: The public, business and society have the same responsibility for climate change, and our goal is to help everyone reduce their impact on the climate.

In order to charge electric vehicles on the island, Volkswagen will also improve about 230 charging points and some public charging facilities. The CEO of Volkswagen said that it is expected that by 2050, Astypalaia will achieve zero emission travel.
