Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently announced that the company plans to fully open-source the designs and software of the Model S and Model X. This follows Tesla’s similar move in November 2023, when it released all available design, engineering, and diagnostic information for its first vehicle, the Roadster. Launched in 2012, the Model S was Tesla’s first mass-produced vehicle. As a luxury all-electric sedan, it reshaped public perception of electric vehicles (EVs) with its long range, high-performance acceleration, and over-the-air (OTA) software update capabilities. The Model X, introduced in 2015, is a high-performance all-electric SUV renowned for its falcon-wing doors, spacious interior, and advanced safety features. Both models have long served as Tesla’s flagship vehicles, playing a pivotal role in popularizing long-range EVs and cementing the company’s leadership in the electric vehicle industry. Tesla officially ceased production of the Model S and Model X in Q2 2026, repurposing their manufacturing lines for projects such as the Optimus humanoid robot and the Cybercab autonomous taxi. At the time of the open-source announcement, these two models were no longer accepting custom orders and were only available as remaining inventory. Following the open-sourcing initiative, existing owners will find it easier to access technical documentation, diagnostic tools, and software resources, enabling them to perform their own repairs or modifications. Independent repair shops and third-party service providers will also gain more comprehensive technical support, reducing reliance on Tesla’s official after-sales services. Additionally, engineers, developers, and automotive enthusiasts will be able to deeply study Tesla’s real-world implementations in battery technology, electric drivetrains, and software architecture—potentially accelerating technological advancement across the entire EV industry. This move continues Tesla’s 2014 pledge to open its patents, aiming to advance sustainable transportation through shared innovation. By releasing technical materials after discontinuing the vehicles, Tesla can continue supporting existing users while focusing its resources on next-generation technologies. The earlier Roadster open-sourcing effort has already inspired numerous simulation projects, community-driven developments, and technical research initiatives. The open-sourcing of the Model S and Model X is expected to generate even broader impact, extending the technological legacy of these landmark vehicles.
