In the opening year of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), nearly 20 provinces and municipalities nationwide have incorporated hydrogen energy into their key development strategies, positioning it as a core driver for fostering new-quality productive forces, advancing energy transition, and upgrading the economy. Compared to the pilot-phase exploration during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, current planning places greater emphasis on systematic integration and forward-looking vision, with regions such as Shaanxi, Guangdong, and Henan advancing hydrogen energy in parallel with cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and nuclear fusion. Local governments are tailoring approaches to their regional strengths: Jilin is developing distinctive applications such as hydrogen-powered intercity trains; Chongqing is accelerating hydrogen refueling station construction; Shanxi and Shandong are promoting integration of hydrogen with geothermal and other diversified energy sources; Anhui is focusing on replacing conventional fuels in industrial and transportation sectors; Beijing is strengthening end-use energy supplementation; and Hebei is building a comprehensive green hydrogen value chain. Automakers are also stepping up efforts. Dongfeng, GAC, and Proton Motor are accelerating demonstration projects and deliveries of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles. Great Wall Motor has launched its “Guiyuan Platform,” compatible with hydrogen fuel, while Haima has accumulated over 1.5 million kilometers of operational mileage in Hainan. On the supply chain front, companies like Faurecia and Schaeffler are increasing investments and driving technological breakthroughs in hydrogen energy, further enhancing the industry ecosystem.
