Woman Pays $9,000 for Mobile Mechanic to Fix Ford—Ends Up Needing a Whole New Engine

A woman hired a mobile mechanic through the Nextdoor platform to replace the timing chain on her Ford pickup truck—a job that ended up taking nearly eight months and costing $9,000, far exceeding the typical market rate of $1,600 to $2,700. When she went to pick up the vehicle, it wouldn’t start. The mechanic simply told her, “It just needs a new starter motor.” Unconvinced, she had the truck towed to Accurate Auto for inspection. There, technicians discovered severe engine compression loss. Upon disassembly, they found the timing chain was completely misaligned, the crankshaft keyway was improperly positioned, and silicone sealant had been haphazardly smeared throughout the engine—so much so that it had even seeped into the intake manifold and radiator hoses. The shop concluded that the engine was irreparably damaged due to improper installation and now requires a complete replacement.
