To address coverage gaps caused by connected vehicle services' reliance on terrestrial networks, satellite communications company UNIVITY recently launched the world’s first ultra-low Earth orbit (VLEO) 5G satellite constellation dedicated to connected cars. Designed specifically for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier-1 suppliers, the system enables seamless integration of space-based communications into existing 5G architectures, avoiding proprietary technology lock-in and dependence on a single vendor. This move is expected to significantly enhance the reliability and continuity of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, over-the-air (OTA) updates, high-definition navigation, and other services in rural, cross-border, and emergency scenarios.
