BMW's M division is planning to develop its first true off-road performance SUV, which could wear the M badge and compete in the Dakar Rally. Frank van Meel, head of BMW M, stated that while the M lineup is renowned for its on-road performance, events like the Dakar Rally also emphasize performance capabilities, making a "rally-bred M" vehicle a logical step rather than a contradiction. The new model, codenamed G74, will target rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Land Rover Defender. It is expected to enter production in the U.S. in 2029 and may replace the XM plug-in hybrid SUV, which is slated to end production at the close of 2028. Although BMW currently lacks a dedicated Dakar Rally vehicle, its Mini brand won the car category of the Dakar Rally in 2021, laying early groundwork for future motorsport ambitions.
