Apple has introduced support for third-party voice-based chatbots in CarPlay for the first time with iOS 26.4, including AI applications such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. According to the updated CarPlay developer guidelines, voice-driven conversational apps are now listed as a newly supported app type and must integrate with Apple’s voice control interface—specifically designed for in-car use—to provide visual feedback. However, these AI apps cannot control vehicle functions or iPhone features, nor can they be launched directly via wake words; users must manually open the apps first. This move aims to enhance driving safety while expanding CarPlay’s intelligent interaction capabilities. iOS 26.4 is currently in beta testing and is expected to roll out officially this spring.
