Rivian has recently officially launched the "Rivian Adventure Department" (RAD), a dedicated team tasked with pushing its vehicles to their performance limits. Composed of engineers, designers, and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts, RAD is seen as Rivian’s public-facing "Skunk Works," aiming to test vehicle capabilities in real-world extreme environments. Since 2018, Rivian has entered R1T prototypes in challenging events across South America, the Rebelle Rally off-road competition, and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Currently, RAD is showcasing the new quad-motor version of the R1S at the FAT Ice Race—an ice racing event held in Big Sky, Montana—featuring exclusive livery and RAD branding. This initiative not only reinforces Rivian’s adventurous identity but also provides invaluable feedback to engineering teams, driving continuous product refinement.
