Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi Group, recently stated in an interview that although advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) have progressed rapidly over the past decade, they remain at Level 2—requiring shared control between human and machine—and drivers must never sleep while using these systems. He emphasized that drivers must keep both hands on the steering wheel and eyes on the road at all times to ensure safety. In his proposal for the 2026 National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (the "Two Sessions"), Lei also called for accelerating the establishment of a traffic safety and civility framework suited for the intelligent vehicle era. This includes refining standards for intelligent technologies, optimizing driver licensing examinations, promoting multi-stakeholder collaborative governance, and enhancing public awareness campaigns on intelligent driving safety to foster a new culture of responsible driving.
