Porsche has filed a new patent with the German Patent and Trademark Office for a transmission shift mechanism capable of switching between manual and automatic modes. The system employs shift-by-wire technology, allowing drivers to select Drive (D), Neutral (N), and Reverse (R) by moving the gear lever forward and backward—just like in a conventional automatic transmission—or switch to an H-pattern layout, enabling them to shift gears by moving the lever left/right and forward/backward as with a traditional manual gearbox. Built-in sensors track the lever’s movements, while springs and motors work together to simulate the tactile feel of real manual shifting. Regardless of whether the underlying transmission is a dual-clutch or a torque-converter automatic, the system delivers a manual-like driving experience. Although this technology remains at the patent stage and may never reach production, it could potentially satisfy enthusiasts who still crave the engagement of manual gear shifting.
