Hyundai Motor Group recently announced a partnership with Zhejiang Huayou Recycling Technology Co., Ltd. to jointly establish a circular utilization system for electric vehicle (EV) power batteries in Indonesia. The collaboration will focus on recycling battery production scrap and end-of-life batteries to achieve a closed-loop resource cycle across the entire battery lifecycle. Waste materials generated from HLI Green Power—a joint venture battery plant between Hyundai and LG Energy Solution located in Karawang, West Java Province, which commenced operations in 2024—will be processed at Huayou Recycling’s local facilities. There, the waste will be crushed into "black mass," from which critical materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel will be extracted for use in new battery production. The partnership is also expected to expand into recycling end-of-life batteries from the aftermarket. Huayou Recycling, a specialized battery recycling subsidiary of Huayou Cobalt, possesses a complete technological chain covering battery dismantling to metal extraction. Both parties also plan to deepen collaboration in black mass refining and the synthesis of recycled materials to enhance overall recycling efficiency. Hyundai stated that this initiative marks a significant step toward building a sustainable battery supply chain but did not disclose specific investment amounts, capacity plans, or recycling volume targets.
