According to Automotive News, Mercedes-AMG plans to launch an all-new four-door G63 convertible SUV in the U.S. in 2028. Production will begin in the third quarter of 2027 at the Graz plant in Austria. The vehicle will retain the boxy design of the hardtop version and be powered by the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo mild-hybrid V8 engine, expected to deliver 577 horsepower. Although Mercedes-Benz produced a G-Class convertible as early as 1979, it was never sold in the U.S. market. In September last year, the brand officially confirmed plans for a G-Class convertible and unveiled a camouflaged prototype, stating it would be offered in most global markets, including the United States. While this niche high-performance convertible SUV is unlikely to significantly contribute to Mercedes-Benz’s goal of achieving 400,000 annual U.S. sales, industry observers widely expect demand to outstrip supply.
