Recently, a video showing a failed jump-start attempt has gone viral on social media. In the footage, jumper cables between two cars emit thick smoke and their insulation melts, dripping onto the ground—yet a bystander uncertainly asks, “Did I connect it to the right terminals?” The video, posted by the automotive channel The ROY Garage, has garnered over 690,000 views. Experienced viewers quickly pointed out that this was most likely caused by reversed polarity (connecting positive and negative terminals incorrectly) or using low-quality jumper cables. While a few suggested an internal short circuit in one of the vehicles could also produce similar results, most emphasized that jumper cables should never smoke—if this happens, they must be disconnected immediately. Comments flooded in with warnings like “Goodbye, alternator” and “Watch out—the battery could explode!” Experts caution that although jump-starting seems straightforward, improper handling can easily fry electrical systems or, in severe cases, cause fires. The exact cause of this incident remains unclear, but the lesson is obvious: if you’re unsure, don’t force it.
