OpenAI recently updated ChatGPT to officially support Apple CarPlay. Users can now ask questions or issue commands to ChatGPT via voice through their car’s infotainment screen, without any need for touch interaction. However, this feature requires an iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later, and users must manually launch the ChatGPT app—it has no dedicated wake word and cannot control vehicle or phone functions. According to Apple’s guidelines, chatbots integrated with CarPlay must rely primarily on voice-based interaction; they are prohibited from displaying text or images and may only show a standardized voice-control interface with up to four action buttons. Additionally, Apple permits only third-party apps in specific categories—such as audio, communications, EV charging, and navigation—to integrate with CarPlay, aiming to minimize driver distraction.
