On April 1, Tang Jing, Head of Product Line at Li Auto, posted an explanation regarding why the company does not prioritize thermal efficiency of its range extender as a key marketing point. He revealed that the third-generation Range Extender 3.0 system in the Li L9 has already achieved a thermal efficiency of 43%, and even exceeds 47% under laboratory conditions. However, he noted that peak thermal efficiency has limited impact on users' real-world experience. Tang emphasized that the core function of the range extender is power generation, and its engine speed has no bearing on driving feel. Consequently, Li Auto has shifted its approach from modifying traditional internal combustion engines to developing a new architecture specifically optimized for electricity generation. Compared to peak efficiency figures, the width of the high-efficiency operating range has a more direct impact on fuel consumption, refueling frequency, noise levels, and maintenance intervals. Li Auto focuses on reducing users’ total cost of ownership and enhancing their overall experience, rather than promoting technical specifications that are difficult for users to perceive.
