A woman purchased a 2018 Tesla Model S, only to be told three days later that she would need to pay approximately $16,000 to replace the battery. At the time of purchase, the vehicle appeared clean and had 110,000 miles on the odometer, but she was unaware that the battery had already fallen outside the manufacturer’s warranty coverage. Tesla offers an eight-year or 150,000-mile warranty (whichever comes first) on Model S batteries, guaranteeing at least 70% capacity retention during that period. Given both its age and mileage, the car likely just exceeded this warranty window. Two days after buying the car, she noticed that after charging to 80–90%, the battery level rapidly dropped to 60%, and she lost another 20% during her commute. She then visited a Tesla Service Center to register the vehicle and attempted to charge it, but the car’s system indicated the battery could not be charged. Through the Tesla app, she confirmed the battery was no longer covered under warranty. Her automotive sales advisor suggested she ask the dealer to cancel the transaction and switch to another vehicle; otherwise, legal action might be necessary. She expressed hesitation about financing another car through the same dealer, as alternative options came with higher monthly payments. The advisor noted that even higher monthly payments would still be preferable to paying thousands for repairs on a vehicle she couldn’t drive. Industry data shows that battery replacement rates for electric vehicles manufactured between 2017 and 2021 have declined from an early rate of 8.5% to just 2%, reflecting technological improvements that have enhanced battery reliability. Additionally, some third-party repair shops offer more affordable partial battery module replacements. The incident has sparked debate on social media, with some users accusing the dealer or previous owner of concealing the issue, while others criticized the buyer for not conducting thorough inspections beforehand. Others expressed sympathy, noting that although such cases are rare, their consequences can be severe. As of now, neither Tesla nor the involved sales personnel have issued an official response.
