In recent years, Mazda has shifted away from its previous stance of resisting large center console screens, adopting larger touchscreens in several new models. The brand had long adhered to minimalist interiors and physical buttons, but its newly launched CX-6e now features a 26-inch central touchscreen. Jo Stenuit, Mazda’s European Design Director, emphasized that despite the larger screen size, the cabin design remains driver-focused. He noted that replacing the traditional digital instrument cluster with a head-up display helps minimize driver distraction by reducing the need to look away from the road. However, not all new Mazda models have completely eliminated the instrument display. For instance, the 6e hatchback EV—co-developed with Changan Automobile in China—retains a 10.2-inch instrument screen alongside a 14.6-inch central touchscreen. Additionally, the popular CX-5 now offers an optional 15.6-inch central display. Regarding the move to eliminate most physical buttons and knobs, Tamara Mlynarczyk, Mazda’s Public Relations Manager for North America, previously stated that this change reflects evolving consumer preferences rather than cost-cutting measures. Stenuit added, “Technology and the market have changed,” signaling that future interior designs will continue moving in this direction. Nevertheless, some argue that models like the MX-5 Miata—which prioritize driving enjoyment—should avoid over-reliance on large screens to preserve their core focus on driver engagement.
