At the 2026 New York International Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled the Boulder, a body-on-frame concept vehicle, alongside its latest design language—"Art of Steel." This design philosophy emphasizes "Stronger, Not Louder," advocating for vehicle exteriors shaped by the inherent qualities of materials and functional authenticity, while avoiding excessive ornamentation. Hyundai’s design team stated that the Boulder concept is purpose-built for outdoor and adventure use, continuing the brand’s exploration of the XRT (Extreme Recreation Transportation) segment initiated with the Santa Cruz pickup. The vehicle features an upright windshield and boxy silhouette to enhance interior spaciousness and outward visibility, while also facilitating the mounting of various outdoor gear. Functional components such as bumpers and tow hooks retain their raw, utilitarian forms, with surface gaps and negative space used deliberately to accentuate their presence and make structural connections clearly visible. In terms of details, the tailgate employs a dual-hinge mechanism with ergonomically integrated grip areas on its surface, eliminating the need for additional handles. The wheels feature a six-spoke design that balances lightweight construction with visual strength. The lighting system uses pixelated graphics and ambient light guides to highlight functional zones. Overall, the design rejects styling for styling’s sake, instead allowing inherent off-road characteristics—such as balanced proportions, a short wheelbase, minimal front and rear overhangs, and high ground clearance—to emerge naturally. Hyundai continues to apply its "chess piece strategy," wherein each model is independently tailored to its specific market segment yet remains cohesive under the brand’s core design principles. The company emphasized that all its design projects are production-intent, and the ideas embodied in the Boulder will influence multiple future adventure-oriented derivatives destined for the North American market.
