A 2018 Honda Accord owner was quoted $8,000 by a California Honda dealership to repair a blown head gasket. Due to the high cost, the car sat unrepaired for nearly two months. The owner then contacted a newly opened independent repair shop, where owner Adrian Aceves diagnosed the same issue—a head gasket leak between cylinders 2 and 3—and completed the repair in just one day for a total of $3,800. Aceves used some aftermarket parts, including $400 ARP head studs and approximately $500 worth of components that aren’t typically replaced but are recommended for renewal during such repairs. He noted that if necessary, cylinder heads might need to be sent to a machine shop for resurfacing—an extra cost of several hundred dollars—but this wasn’t required in this case. After the repair, the vehicle was running again and scheduled for a test drive the following day. The dealership’s diagnosis was accurate; the difference lay solely in pricing. Aceves explained that his labor rate is less than half that of local dealerships, primarily because his operating costs are significantly lower than those of authorized service centers. He added that some customers may delay or even misjudge the severity of their vehicle issues due to high repair quotes. Following the release of a video documenting the repair, it garnered widespread attention, with many viewers asking about specific costs, part choices, and the feasibility of preventive replacements—highlighting consumers’ holistic considerations regarding price, repair turnaround time, and long-term reliability.
