Jakarta Advances EV Charging Infrastructure to Support Energy Transition and Carbon Reduction Goals

The Jakarta Special Capital Region government is actively advancing the development of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in public and government facilities to address the growing number of EVs in the city and fulfill its carbon reduction targets. On April 17, the Head of Jakarta’s Agency for Manpower, Immigration, and Energy stated that the continuous rise in EV adoption presents a strategic opportunity for local authorities to strengthen clean energy policies. Jakarta’s EV adoption has been supported by government incentives, including exemptions from the city’s “odd-even” license plate-based traffic restriction policy. This measure aims to accelerate the energy transition and help achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 compared to baseline levels, ultimately reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. To enhance charging accessibility, Jakarta is expanding the deployment of affordable, 24-hour public charging stations and plans to broaden their coverage across the city. Additionally, the government has already integrated EVs into its own operations and installed dedicated charging infrastructure at various government offices, including the Mayor’s Office, Governor’s Office, Regional Legislative Council buildings, departmental offices, and numerous affiliated agencies. In terms of user data management, the Jakarta Special Capital Region government has partnered with private companies and Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company (PLN) to jointly monitor the growth of two- and four-wheeled EV users. The collected data will inform planning for charging infrastructure needs, including applications for residential home charger installations and the strategic placement of new public charging stations.
