General Motors has halted development of next-generation electric pickups. There are currently no planned direct successors for the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, GMC Hummer EV (including both SUV and pickup variants), or Cadillac Escalade IQ. These models represent flagship electric offerings from their respective brands, each boasting over 400 miles (approximately 643.7 km) of range on a single charge, curb weights exceeding 9,000 pounds (about 4,082 kg), high towing capacity, strong power output, and support for 350 kW DC fast charging. The Cadillac Escalade IQ, originally slated for a 2028 launch, was once positioned as the debut vehicle for GM’s hands-free highway driving automation system. However, that plan has now been shelved. Just months ago, GM still indicated the Escalade IQ would drive its autonomous-driving business forward—marking a clear strategic shift today. GM has not confirmed whether it will pivot toward developing range-extended electric pickups and declined to comment specifically on related reports. Company spokesperson Kevin Kelly stated that GM has not announced any potential plans or timelines for next-generation battery-electric pickups and does not engage in speculation about such matters. The broader electric pickup market is under significant pressure. Ford has ceased production of the F-150 Lightning and canceled its all-electric successor program, while Ram has terminated development of the 1500 REV. Both companies are now shifting focus toward range-extended electric models. Tesla continues delivering several thousand Cybertrucks per quarter, though demand remains far below initial expectations. Meanwhile, Ford is planning an affordable electric pickup priced under $30,000 based on the Maverick platform, alongside a range-extended Lightning variant targeting customers with high towing needs. The revived Scout brand also intends to launch both range-extended and battery-electric pickups simultaneously.
