CATL and HiPower signed a strategic cooperation agreement on sodium-ion batteries for energy storage on April 27 in Ningde, Fujian Province, securing a three-year order totaling 60 GWh. HiPower has become CATL’s first strategic partner for sodium-ion batteries in the energy storage sector. The two companies will collaborate on technology development, product application, and project implementation. The signing ceremony was represented by Li Yue, Vice President of CATL’s Zero-Carbon Energy Business Unit for China, and Zhao Qing, Vice President of HiPower. This partnership demonstrates that CATL has resolved all key technical challenges across the sodium-ion battery mass production chain and now possesses the capability for large-scale delivery. This order represents the largest sodium-ion battery order globally to date. CATL has enhanced battery energy density through morphology control and surface modification, and implemented advanced manufacturing techniques—including angstrom-level pore-size tuning, surface molecular moisture-locking, and adaptive dynamic formation—to address issues such as bubbling and moisture control in hard carbon production lines, ensuring consistent quality in high-volume output. CATL’s energy storage sodium-ion batteries feature a standardized platform design identical in dimensions to lithium-ion batteries, enabling compatibility with existing supply chains, reducing integration costs, and accelerating deployment timelines for energy storage projects. CATL previously stated that multiple next-generation battery technologies, including sodium-ion batteries, are in its technology pipeline, with its “Na-Xin” sodium-ion battery scheduled for large-scale mass production and market launch this year.
