Volkswagen Group is facing severe market challenges, with CFO and COO Arno Antlitz stating that the rapid rise of Chinese brands in Europe and newly imposed U.S. tariffs have significantly impacted the company's finances. In response, the group plans a fundamental shift in its business model to drive structural and sustainable cost optimization. Specific measures include optimizing vehicle cost structures without compromising core product value, substantially cutting administrative expenses, improving factory operational efficiency, and accelerating technology development and decision-making processes. Over the coming months, Volkswagen will streamline its product portfolio and technical platforms, potentially discontinuing certain models and variants and reducing the number of platform architectures. This is not the first time executives have emphasized the need for business model adjustments. As early as July 2025, Oliver Blume—then CEO of Porsche and now CEO of Volkswagen Group—noted that the previously successful business model was no longer suited to the current environment. As part of the restructuring, Volkswagen plans to cut approximately 50,000 jobs in Germany over the next four years and lower its global annual production target to 9 million vehicles to address overcapacity. The group’s annual output had long exceeded 10 million units, peaking above 11 million in 2018, but fell to 8.9 million in 2023. Sales are also under pressure. In the first quarter of 2024, all Volkswagen Group passenger car brands reported declining deliveries except Škoda: Volkswagen brand sales dropped 7.6% year-over-year to 1,048,300 units; SEAT/Cupra fell 1% to 145,300 units; Audi declined 6.1% to 360,100 units; Porsche saw the steepest drop, down 14.7% to 61,000 units; Bentley deliveries fell 9.9% to 2,200 units; and Lamborghini decreased 11.7% to 2,600 units. Škoda was the only brand to post growth, with sales rising 14% to 271,900 units—insufficient, however, to offset the overall downward trend.
