GM Cuts 600 IT Jobs to Accelerate AI Talent Transformation

General Motors recently carried out a round of workforce adjustments in its IT department, cutting approximately 600 salaried employees—more than 10% of the department's total headcount. The company confirmed that the layoffs aim to create openings for technical talent with artificial intelligence (AI) expertise, rather than simply reducing labor costs. GM is actively transforming its information technology organization and continues to hire talent in AI-related fields, with key focus areas including AI-native development, data engineering and analytics, cloud-native engineering, agent and model development, prompt engineering, and AI workflow design. The new roles require candidates capable of building AI systems from the ground up, training models, and constructing scalable engineering pipelines. Previously, in October 2025, the company laid off around 1,700 employees due to slowing demand for electric vehicles, as part of efforts to optimize resource allocation and sharpen its focus on core technological initiatives.
