Recently, vehicle owners in multiple regions have reported difficulties with parking, primarily because the dimensions of purchased or leased parking spaces are too small to accommodate current mainstream vehicle models. On-site investigations reveal that standard parking spaces in newly built residential complexes typically have a clear width of approximately 2 meters. However, popular new energy SUVs and MPVs currently dominating the market often have body widths approaching or exceeding 2 meters, leading to challenges such as difficulty maneuvering into parking spots, restricted door opening, and inconvenience when entering or exiting vehicles. China’s current design standards for private passenger vehicle parking spaces stipulate that perpendicular (reverse-in) parking spaces should be 2.4 meters wide and 5.1 meters long; if adjacent to a wall, the length must be no less than 5.3 meters. For parallel parking spaces, the standard width is 2.1 meters, increasing to at least 2.4 meters when adjacent to a wall, with a total length of 6.0 meters. On-street parking spaces in urban areas also follow these guidelines. The current “parking shortage and cramped spaces” issue stems from two main factors: first, some developments deliver parking spaces smaller than the stipulated standards, effectively offering reduced dimensions; second, the overall size of mass-produced passenger vehicles has steadily increased in recent years, exacerbating the mismatch with existing parking standards. This problem is particularly pronounced as mid-to-large-size SUVs and new energy MPVs gain popularity—both vehicle types generally feature greater widths, further highlighting spatial incompatibility. Local authorities have noted that the previously established standard width of 2.4 meters for parking spaces now appears inadequate. Even increasing it to 2.5 meters may not fully resolve practical usability issues, primarily because new energy passenger vehicles are generally wider than traditional internal combustion engine cars. Industry experts emphasize that parking space and garage design involves multiple considerations—including land use efficiency, public infrastructure effectiveness, commercial viability, and user convenience—and any adjustment to relevant standards requires comprehensive evaluation rather than simplistic conclusions about the obsolescence of current norms.
