Recently, car owners in many regions have reported difficulties parking in underground garages and shopping mall parking lots, with new energy vehicles (NEVs) facing particular challenges due to their larger dimensions, which often exceed the capacity of existing parking spaces. To alleviate range anxiety, NEVs commonly feature larger battery packs, resulting in increased overall vehicle length and width. Additionally, consumer preference for more spacious vehicles has prompted automakers to launch models with even larger footprints. However, China's current parking space dimension standards have not been updated for years and no longer align with the actual sizes of today’s vehicles. Some developers, aiming to control costs, have further reduced parking space sizes to the minimum allowed by regulations—or even below—exacerbating parking shortages. Affected homeowners encounter significant hurdles when seeking redress, including difficulties in gathering evidence and navigating complex procedures. Developers frequently refuse to make adjustments, citing that their projects have already passed final inspection and acceptance. Industry experts are urging authorities to promptly revise parking space design standards to accommodate the evolving trends in NEV development and ensure basic parking needs for vehicle owners.
