Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius stated that the company is open to entering the defense equipment manufacturing sector if it proves commercially viable. He noted that given the current complex global landscape, Europe urgently needs to enhance its defense capabilities, and Mercedes-Benz is willing to play a role in this area. As a large-scale vehicle manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz possesses the capability to mass-produce high-quality, precision equipment—advantages that could facilitate its entry into military equipment manufacturing. Currently, defense-related business accounts for only a small portion of its overall operations, but it holds growth potential; further strategic moves will need to be closely watched. Mercedes-Benz has previously been involved in defense activities: after spinning off its truck division in 2021, it retained a majority stake, and that unit has long produced heavy-duty military trucks. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz has long supplied military-spec G-Class off-road vehicles. With multiple European countries increasing defense spending, German automakers are now viewing the defense industry as a new growth opportunity. Volkswagen Group is currently in talks with Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to establish a joint venture aimed at producing components for the "Iron Dome" air-defense system. Moreover, senior U.S. defense officials from the former Trump administration previously held preliminary discussions with General Motors and Ford Motor Company about leveraging automotive manufacturing facilities to boost ammunition production and replenish military stockpiles depleted by conflicts such as the war in Ukraine.
