Recently, residents of the Buckhead neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia, reported that multiple Waymo autonomous taxis have been frequently and inexplicably entering local dead-end streets. One resident stated that between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. on a recent morning, approximately 50 empty Waymo self-driving vehicles converged on a single dead-end street, repeatedly driving back and forth. Similar incidents have occurred in other dead ends throughout the area. In an attempt to block the vehicles from entering, residents placed a fluorescent green warning sign featuring a child crossing symbol at the entrance of the street. While this measure successfully prevented the vehicles from proceeding further, it caused at least eight autonomous cars to repeatedly attempt U-turns and reverse maneuvers on the spot, resulting in prolonged road obstructions. Waymo responded by acknowledging that it had become aware of the issue involving its autonomous vehicles taking unusual routes in Atlanta and stated that it is implementing corrective actions, though it did not specify the exact cause. The company emphasized that its service completes over 500,000 trips weekly and remains committed to ensuring the safety and experience of both passengers and local communities.
