Tesla's Supervised FSD Launches in Lithuania, Accelerating European Rollout via EU Mutual Recognition

Tesla has rolled out its Supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature to vehicle owners in Lithuania. This feature, classified as a Level 2 driver assistance system under United Nations Regulation No. 171 (UN R-171), requires drivers to remain fully attentive at all times, be prepared to take immediate control of the vehicle, and assume full legal responsibility. The car’s driver monitoring sensors will temporarily disable the feature if prolonged driver distraction is detected. This rollout follows the European Whole Vehicle Type Approval granted by the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW) on April 10, 2026, for Supervised FSD running software version 14.3. Under the EU’s mutual recognition framework, other member states can directly accept this certification without requiring additional testing. Lithuania’s Road Safety Administration completed its approval process on May 18, 2026, officially authorizing the feature’s local deployment. Prior to the official release, Tesla launched FSD test-drive experiences at its Vilnius store starting April 20 and, in late April, began recruiting Autonomous Vehicle Operations Specialists in Lithuania and eight other countries to prepare for large-scale deployment. Currently, Supervised FSD in Europe is available exclusively via subscription; the one-time purchase option was discontinued globally in February 2026. Lithuanian users pay €99 per month for FSD, or €49 per month if they have already purchased Enhanced Autopilot. Tesla stated that subscription pricing will increase as the system evolves toward unsupervised autonomous driving. Leveraging the Netherlands-issued pan-European type approval, Tesla expects FSD to expand more rapidly across additional European countries in the second half of 2026.
