NIO plans to launch and begin deliveries of its new all-electric SUV, the ES9, on May 27. Equipped with multiple industry-first technologies and class-leading features, the ES9 is positioned as an executive flagship SUV, primarily competing against traditional internal combustion engine models such as the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. Since test drives opened on May 11, daily orders for the ES9 have risen significantly compared to pre-test-drive levels. The launch of the ES9 has also positively impacted sales of NIO’s existing ES8 model. Some customers, after comparing both vehicles during test drives, opted to purchase the ES8 instead, driving increased orders. In the first 20 days of May, ES8 orders reached their highest level since November 2023. Following the ES9’s debut, average daily ES8 orders rose nearly 30% month-over-month, with a 20% week-over-week increase recorded in the first week after test drives began. Currently, new ES8 orders remain at a high level, having already passed the typical post-launch dip. NIO stated that the ES9 and ES8 serve complementary roles with distinct target audiences. The ES8 offers broader usability, catering to both business and family travel needs, and the two models are clearly differentiated in terms of pricing and market segmentation.
