According to data from the Passenger Car Market Information Joint Committee of the China Automobile Dealers Association, China's new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales in May are expected to reach 950,000 units, up 12% month-over-month, with a record-high market penetration rate of 62.5%. Driven by NEVs, total retail sales of passenger cars (narrow definition) in May are projected at 1.52 million units, an increase of nearly 10% compared to April. In April, retail sales of passenger cars (narrow definition) totaled 1.382 million units, down 21.5% year-over-year and 16% month-over-month. Of this, fuel-powered vehicle sales reached 534,000 units, falling 37.2% year-over-year and 32.7% month-over-month, while NEV retail sales stood at 848,000 units, down 6.9% year-over-year but roughly flat month-over-month, with a penetration rate of 61.3%. The recovery in the auto market in May has been driven by multiple factors: heightened consumer willingness to purchase vehicles during the May Day holiday, large-scale auto shows held across numerous regions, intensified promotional efforts by automakers, and the gradual delivery of new models launched around the Beijing Auto Show. Surveys indicate that leading automakers—accounting for over 70% of total sales—have set May retail targets approximately 10% higher than in April, aligning with typical seasonal trends. The Passenger Car Association forecasts that May’s auto market will show a "strong start, softer finish" pattern, with overall moderate growth as the market gradually returns to normal operations.
