During the 2026 Future Mobility Pioneers Conference, Ma Mingyue, a researcher at the Traffic Management Research Institute of China's Ministry of Public Security, stated that current autonomous driving technologies still exhibit significant shortcomings in complying with traffic regulations—a critical safety gap hindering their rapid advancement. She cited Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system as an example: when first introduced to the Chinese market, it failed to recognize dedicated non-motorized vehicle lanes and mistakenly entered them. Additionally, in July 2025, Wang Qiang, Director-General of the Traffic Management Bureau under the Ministry of Public Security, explicitly emphasized that the "intelligent driving" systems installed in vehicles currently sold on the market have not yet reached the level of true autonomous driving, and drivers remain ultimately responsible for road safety.
