In May 2026, China's new energy vehicle (NEV) market underwent significant changes. The NEV penetration rate for the month is expected to exceed 62%, further squeezing the market share of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Leapmotor sold 81,500 units, a year-over-year increase of 81%. NIO delivered 37,705 vehicles, with its multi-brand strategy beginning to show synergistic effects, though the independent operational capability of its Onvo brand remains to be proven. Li Auto delivered 33,350 units, marking its second consecutive month of both year-over-year and month-over-month declines, resulting in a shift from profit to loss in Q1 2026. XPeng delivered 32,158 units—the highest monthly figure since the start of 2026. Xiaomi Auto maintained sales above 30,000 units for two consecutive months. Huawei’s Aito (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) delivered 46,122 units, reclaiming a top spot in sales rankings. Among the "second-generation" EV brands, Zeekr and Deepal stood out with strong and notable sales performances. Overall, China’s NEV market in 2026 has transitioned from broad-based growth to competition within a saturated market, with future rivalry increasingly centered on comprehensive, end-to-end system capabilities.
