General Motors recently announced a partnership with startup Peak Energy Technologies to officially enter the stationary energy storage market. Earlier this year, in May, Ford Motor Company established a wholly owned subsidiary, Ford Energy, dedicated to stationary battery energy storage systems, with plans to achieve an annual production capacity of 20 GWh. Automakers are expanding into energy storage for several strategic reasons: First, they seek new growth opportunities—some traditional automakers facing challenges such as insufficient product competitiveness and losses in their EV businesses during electrification can utilize idle battery capacity through energy storage ventures. Second, they aim to reduce overall costs; leveraging their accumulated expertise in automotive batteries allows them to repurpose technology for energy storage applications, thereby cutting expenses. BYD, for instance, has built a closed-loop ecosystem encompassing energy generation, storage, usage, grid integration, and recycling. Third, they intend to strengthen their ecosystem moat by integrating charging infrastructure to enhance user experience. Fourth, they aspire to reshape their valuation framework—transitioning from traditional vehicle manufacturers to energy-tech enterprises capable of generating recurring service revenue. Currently, Tesla’s energy storage business has become its second pillar, with its Megapack products deployed in numerous large-scale computing projects. BYD, capitalizing on its foundational strength in batteries, has extensively expanded into energy storage and introduced ultra-fast charging technology. Ford is retooling factories to produce energy storage systems competitive with Tesla’s offerings, while GM has opted to collaborate with grid-scale energy storage firms and explore sodium-ion battery technologies. As AI infrastructure drives rising demand for power and energy storage, automakers are accelerating their expansion into the energy sector.
