Xiaomi Auto recently provided a detailed account of the development process behind the "Cherry Red" paint option for its YU7 GT model. This color was designed to break away from conventional perceptions of red on sports cars, drawing inspiration from nature to achieve a harmonious balance of depth, vibrancy, and subtlety. In the early stages, the R&D team conducted multiple rounds of color formulation and validation, ultimately settling on the concept of a “rich red that grows from within.” To achieve this effect, the team added precisely measured nano-scale red pigment to a standard transparent clear coat, creating a dual-layer translucent red structure—comprising both a red basecoat and a red-tinted clear coat. When light hits the surface, it first passes through the red-tinged clear coat before reflecting off the red basecoat underneath, mimicking how light penetrates the skin and flesh of a cherry. This creates a vivid, luminous red that appears to glow from within. This innovative process places higher demands on spray precision, compatibility between high-temperature and low-temperature paints, quality control, and consistency in mass production. Through multiple rounds of parallel development and meticulous fine-tuning, Xiaomi’s design and engineering teams successfully achieved stable, large-scale application of this technically challenging red finish on production vehicles.
