In April 2026, new car sales in Europe rose by 6.4% year-on-year, reaching over 1.15 million units. Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales surged by 38% year-on-year, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales grew by 21%. That month, Chinese automakers captured a record-high 9.8% market share in Europe—the highest ever for a single month. Brands such as SAIC Motor’s MG, BYD, and Chery saw significant sales growth, driven primarily by their plug-in hybrid and fully electric models. As Chinese brands continue advancing their local presence in Europe, their market penetration is expected to rise further, though they must also navigate potential challenges such as trade barriers.
