In mid-June 2024, smart officially launched its largest-ever model to date—the smart #6. As the brand’s first sedan equipped with the EHD Super Hybrid electric powertrain system, the #6 measures 4,906 mm in length, 1,922 mm in width, and 1,508 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,926 mm. It boasts a maximum range of up to 1,810 km and comes standard across all trims with LiDAR and the “Qianli Haohan” intelligent driving system. Tong Xiangbei, CEO of smart Automobile Holding Limited, stated that in the foreseeable future, smart will not launch any model larger than the #6. Meanwhile, the brand plans to introduce in China by the end of 2024 its new two-door compact car—the smart #2—which embodies the brand’s “soul.” Built on the ECA architecture specifically developed for two-seater BEVs, the #2 presents significant engineering challenges, requiring a delicate balance among safety, range, interior space, and driving experience. smart’s current product lineup includes the #1, #3, #5, and #6, spanning multiple segments such as compact SUVs, coupes, and premium liftback sedans. The brand adheres to the strategy of “premium small cars and personalized large vehicles,” guided by three core DNA principles: Designed with Love (Mercedes-Benz design), No Compromise on Safety, and Amazing Drives. smart is a 50:50 joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely. Its design is led by Mercedes-Benz’s German team, while engineering and R&D are handled by the Chinese team, with deep collaboration between both sides across styling, engineering, and tuning. The brand emphasizes that its products are not simply a case of “foreign design + Chinese engineering,” but rather the result of integrated global resources. In 2024, Europe has become smart’s largest sales market, with the #5 serving as the volume driver. While facing intense competition in China, the brand aims to gradually boost sales through the launch of the #6, a mid-cycle refresh of the #1, and the introduction of the #2. To date, smart has established a presence in 41 countries worldwide, operating via a direct-to-consumer (DTC) model. Technologically, both the #5 and #6 are equipped with Doubao, a large AI language model, enabling continuous iteration of their intelligent cockpits and advanced driver-assistance systems. Internally, smart also extensively leverages AI—for example, in multilingual owner’s manual translation and AI-powered sales training simulations—to enhance operational efficiency. Executives stress that smart’s brand essence is not defined by vehicle size or seating capacity, but by its unique DNA and user experience. With the #2’s launch scheduled for year-end, the brand’s product portfolio will become more complete, and the return of this iconic model is expected to reinforce consumer recognition of smart’s distinctive character.
