In May, registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in 17 major European markets reached 212,387 units, up 34.4% year-over-year, with BEVs capturing a record-high market share of 23.6%. Data shows that year-over-year growth rates were 34.1% in April and 51.3% in March, indicating that Europe’s transition toward vehicle electrification continues to accelerate. France recorded a BEV market share of 29.5% in May, while Germany stood at 25%. In the first five months of this year, BEV registrations in Germany rose 41% year-over-year. Italy saw its BEV registrations double during the same period, driven by newly introduced purchase incentives. Nordic and Benelux countries delivered standout performances: Denmark achieved a BEV penetration rate of 78.7%, Finland 49.6%, Sweden 41.2%, the Netherlands 41.3%, and Belgium 36.8%. Despite intensifying competition from Chinese automakers, European brands still occupied seven of the top ten spots in May’s best-selling BEV models.
