Dongfeng's all-new Yipai M8 flagship model features wheels crafted with friction stir welding (FSW)—a technology unique in its class. Originally developed for welding rocket fuel tanks, FSW enables weight reduction and noise suppression through a modular composite manufacturing process. The wheel spokes are made from A356 alloy via low-temperature precision casting, while the rims are formed from 6061 aluminum alloy through spinning, stamping, and flanging, then seamlessly joined using FSW. This process reduces the weight of each wheel by up to 25%, cutting unsprung mass by 9.6 kg. The wheels incorporate Helmholtz resonators at the joint between the spoke and rim, actively canceling tire cavity resonance noise. At urban cruising speeds of 20–60 km/h, this design reduces noise by up to 11.5 decibels. The Yipai M8 made its global debut on May 23. Measuring over 5 meters in length with a wheelbase exceeding 3 meters, it is offered in both all-electric and range-extended variants. The vehicle is equipped with Huawei’s Qiankun Six-in-One Technology Suite, including Qiankun ADS 5 Pro intelligent driving system, HarmonySpace 5.2 smart cockpit, Qiankun Cloud, Qiankun Vehicle Control, WhaleFin connectivity, and the HUAWEI SOUND 21-speaker audio system.
