In late June 2026, Porsche explicitly stated at its annual general meeting that the 911 model will not receive a fully electric version. CEO Michael Lietz announced that, as part of the company’s “Strategy 2035,” the 911 will be the only model line in Porsche’s portfolio without a pure-electric counterpart. He emphasized that the 911’s evolution will rely on internal combustion engines and hybrid technology, with the hybrid system serving as an indispensable foundation for the model. Currently, Porsche is aggressively advancing electrification across its other vehicle lines: the Taycan is fully electric; the Macan and Cayenne are offered in both all-electric and combustion-engine variants; and the revived 718 Boxster and Cayman also feature dual powertrain options. The 911 alone remains excluded from the pure-electric roadmap. Porsche has consistently and repeatedly reaffirmed this stance, and its latest statement was notably more resolute. Since its inception, the 911 has been defined by its flat-six engine, rear-engine/rear-wheel-drive layout, and distinctive exhaust note—traits widely regarded as the soul of the brand. Porsche believes that full electrification would dilute these iconic characteristics. Moreover, the 2026 911 GTS already features a T-Hybrid system, enhancing performance and efficiency while preserving the model’s signature driving dynamics. Meanwhile, Porsche faces mounting market pressures, with disappointing financial results in 2025—particularly due to declining sales in China—prompting the company to adopt a more conservative strategy. Against this backdrop, developing an all-electric 911 is not considered a priority. Nevertheless, given the rapid pace of change in the automotive industry, whether Porsche will uphold this commitment remains to be seen.
