BMW has released teaser images of the fifth-generation X5, which will make its official debut soon. As the first non-BEV model built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, the 2027 X5 features significant updates in both design and technology. Exterior-wise, the new X5 blends retro and modern elements. Its front fascia sports a narrow, vertically oriented twin-kidney grille inspired by classic BMW models from the 1960s and 1970s, such as the 1600, 2000, and 2002. Flanking the grille are two horizontal LED light strips that seamlessly connect to an all-new X-shaped daytime running light signature, replacing the blade-style lighting used on earlier models like the iX3. Technologically, the fifth-gen X5 fully transitions to the Neue Klasse architecture, which supports multiple powertrain configurations. Debuting alongside it will be the first all-electric iX5 SUV, expected to feature BMW’s sixth-generation cylindrical battery cells and an 800-volt excited synchronous motor that contains no rare-earth materials, offering improved energy density and efficiency. Even the combustion-engine X5 will receive substantial electrification upgrades, including an enhanced mild-hybrid system with a broader operating range and plug-in hybrid variants—aligning its technical approach with the 2027 mid-cycle refresh of the 7 Series. While the exterior design may draw mixed reactions, all changes are ultimately aimed at maintaining the X5’s market competitiveness. Full details will be revealed at the official launch.
