Audi has confirmed it will revive the A4 nameplate in 2028 with an all-new, fully electric four-door sedan to compete directly against the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The vehicle will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), making it one of the first models to utilize this new architecture. It will also adopt Audi’s Concept C design language, becoming the first production model in the brand’s mainstream four-door lineup to embody this design philosophy. The new EV shares no direct technical or product lineage with the current A5. Previously, the A5 had absorbed both the former A4 sedan and Avant (wagon) variants. However, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner stated in September 2023 that the previous naming strategy—assigning odd numbers to internal combustion engine models and even numbers to electric vehicles—was a mistake. The brand will now return to its original naming logic: “A” for sedans, “Q” for SUVs, with numerical designations reflecting vehicle class hierarchy. The electric A4 will also feature a revised interior design, upgrading material quality while reducing the number of screens and reintroducing physical buttons. Additionally, Audi plans to launch an electric Avant (wagon) variant simultaneously, emphasizing that this body style remains a core element of the brand’s DNA. A limited-edition Nuvolari model, capped at 499 units, will begin deliveries in 2027 and will be the first to showcase the Concept C design language. Meanwhile, a production version of the Concept C—positioned as the spiritual successor to the TT—will also arrive before 2028, though it will target a more niche market segment.
