Audi to Revive A4 Nameplate in 2028 with New All-Electric Sedan on SSP Platform

Audi plans to revive the A4 nameplate in 2028 with an all-new, fully electric four-door sedan positioned to compete directly against the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The vehicle will be built on the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) developed by the Volkswagen Group, making it one of the first production models based on this new architecture. Styled according to the Concept C design language, it will be the first Audi mainstream four-door model to adopt this design philosophy. Previously, the limited-edition Nuvolari—restricted to 499 units—will begin deliveries in 2027 and will be the first to feature the Concept C design cues. The all-electric A4 will share no direct technical or product lineage with the current A5 (which replaced the original combustion-engine A4). Inside, the new model will feature upgraded materials, fewer screens, and a return to physical buttons—addressing recent criticisms over declining interior quality in some Audi models. Audi CTO Rüven Mohr confirmed that the Avant wagon variant will continue, preserving a longstanding brand tradition. Additionally, Audi had introduced a naming strategy in 2023 assigning odd numbers to internal-combustion models and even numbers to EVs, which led to the A4 being absorbed into the A5 lineup. However, the company acknowledged in September 2023 that this approach was misguided and announced it would revert to its original naming system: “A” for sedans, “Q” for SUVs, with numerical designations reflecting vehicle size and market segment.
