Volkswagen Evaluates Bringing China-Developed Models to Europe, ID. Era 9X Likely First

Volkswagen is evaluating the possibility of introducing models developed for the Chinese market to Europe, with options including importing fully built vehicles or producing them—or their components—locally in Europe. The project is currently in the preliminary research phase, and Volkswagen has not yet made any public statements on the matter. Internal sources indicate that the company has initiated initial feasibility studies, with its Zwickau plant in Saxony, Germany, identified as a potential production site. The models under consideration include the ID.Era9X, a range-extended electric SUV co-developed by Volkswagen and SAIC Motor, as well as a new SUV based on Volkswagen’s China-specific CSP platform. Volkswagen is also reviewing whether software systems developed in China meet European market requirements and is considering localization adjustments related to software features, driver-assistance systems, in-car materials, and compliance with local regulatory standards. This initiative is linked to mounting business pressures facing Volkswagen, including overcapacity and declining profit margins in Europe, as well as intensifying competition from Chinese automakers. As part of its response, Volkswagen is advancing a new round of reforms. The company’s supervisory board is scheduled to meet on July 9, 2026, and this topic is expected to be included in the agenda. Volkswagen plans to launch approximately 40 new models in China by 2027, many of which will be developed on locally tailored platforms. Relatively lower R&D and manufacturing costs in China are a key driver behind this evaluation, though the project still faces potential challenges related to EU tariffs and regulatory policies.
