High Fuel Prices Drive Australian EV Sales to Record High in June, with BYD Delivering Nearly 19,000 Units

In June 2026, new vehicle sales in Australia reached a record high of 140,058 units. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) together accounted for 36% of total sales, with approximately 49,000 consumers taking delivery of an electric vehicle that month. Persistently high fuel prices have accelerated the shift among local consumers from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric models. That month, BYD delivered 18,800 new vehicles in Australia—just 243 fewer than market leader Toyota. Its best-selling model was the Sealion 7, with 4,730 units sold, followed by the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid pickup, which recorded 3,398 deliveries. The Tesla Model Y remained Australia’s best-selling vehicle for the second consecutive month, with 8,072 units sold—outpacing traditional gasoline-powered pickups such as the Ford Ranger (5,999 units) and the Toyota HiLux 4x4 (5,175 units). According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, automotive fuel prices in March 2026 rose 10.7% year-on-year, with unleaded petrol approaching AUD 2.50 per liter in some regions. Trading Economics reported that the national average gasoline price peaked at a record USD 1.74 per liter that month, falling back to USD 1.10 by June but remaining elevated. Currently, BYD and Tesla dominate Australia’s electric vehicle market. BYD covers multiple segments—including SUVs and pickups, as well as both BEV and PHEV variants—with models like the Sealion 7, Shark 6, and Atto 3. Tesla continues to lead primarily through the Model Y. Meanwhile, Chinese automakers are increasingly viewing Australia as a key overseas market and are accelerating their channel expansion and brand investments in the country.
