BMW Confirms New X5 M Performance with V8 Engine for 2027

BMW has confirmed it will launch a V8-powered high-performance variant of the fifth-generation X5 in 2027. Belonging to the M Performance lineup, the model is widely speculated to be named the X5 M60. Initially, the new X5 will debut exclusively with an inline-six engine, with the V8 version added later. This V8 variant will feature a 48V mild-hybrid system but will not use a large-capacity traction battery, preserving its combustion-engine driving character. The next-generation X5 marks BMW’s first production model offered simultaneously with five powertrain options: gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, all-electric, and hydrogen fuel cell. Alongside the V8 model, BMW will also introduce the plug-in hybrid performance variant, the X5 M60e—though this version will not be sold in North America. A high-performance all-electric iX5 is also under development. The full-fledged X5 M model has not yet had its launch timing announced, but it is expected no earlier than 2028. Due to the upcoming Euro 7 emissions regulations, BMW has already reduced the output of several current V8 models, and the final power specifications for the X5 M60 have not been disclosed. Additionally, the next-generation X7 and updated 7 Series, both due for a 2027 refresh, will also receive V8 variants. Alpina will develop its own V8 models based on the 7 Series and X7. Rolls-Royce’s 6.75-liter V12 engine will continue production but will not be used in any BMW-branded passenger vehicles.
