Fuel Shortages in Russia Drive Surge in Chinese EV Sales

Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure have triggered gasoline and diesel supply shortages in Russia, driving retail fuel prices in some regions to the highest levels in Europe. Against this backdrop, Russian consumers are showing significantly increased demand for Chinese-brand electric vehicles (EVs). A dealer specializing in Chinese automotive brands reported that its monthly EV sales have surged from just 2–3 units a few weeks ago to 2–3 units per day currently. Analysts note that although sales of EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are growing rapidly, the overall base remains low, and the industry faces insufficient inventory and inadequate preparedness for the fuel crisis. Data shows that in the first five months of this year, Russia sold approximately 24,600 new PHEVs, a 125% year-on-year increase, while pure EV sales reached 4,460 units, up 19% year-on-year. Sales growth accelerated further in June. Currently, the best-selling electric and hybrid models in Russia are primarily from Chinese manufacturers Geely, Dongfeng, GAC, and Chery. The domestic brand Evolute also produces its vehicles using assembly kits supplied by Dongfeng.
