Porsche's 3-Year Resale Value Drops Below 60% as EVs Drive Down Luxury ICE Car Values

According to China's automotive residual value research data for June 2026, Porsche’s three-year residual value ratio stood at 58.5%, down 10.3 percentage points from a year earlier—marking the first time it has fallen below 60%. At the end of 2022, the brand’s residual value ratio had reached 100.3%. During the same period, other mainstream luxury brands—including Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, BMW, and Audi—also saw declines in their three-year residual value ratios. In May, the penetration rate of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China’s domestic market reached 62.9%, while sales of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles dropped nearly 40% year-on-year. With NEVs now firmly established as market leaders, sales of traditional luxury ICE vehicles have continued to shrink. Automakers have widely resorted to aggressive price discounts—for example, BMW offered discounts exceeding 10% on multiple models, and the terminal retail price of the Audi A6L was significantly reduced—pushing down the upper price limits for used cars. Consumer preferences have shifted toward premium NEV models, reducing demand for used luxury ICE vehicles. Used-car dealers have grown more cautious about acquiring luxury ICE models, offering lower purchase prices for the same models compared to previous years, which has substantially widened resale losses for owners. The market structure has undergone a fundamental shift, making it unlikely that traditional luxury ICE vehicles will regain their former residual value advantage.
