Nissan Exports Plug-in Hybrid Pickup from China to Mexico to Counter BYD

Nissan Motor has launched a plan to export vehicles produced in China to overseas markets, with Mexico as the first destination. Sales in Mexico are expected to begin as early as 2026. This move aims to counter BYD’s rapid expansion in the Mexican market. The first model to be exported is the plug-in hybrid pickup “Frontier Pro,” developed by Zhengzhou Nissan based on the “Xinghe” global multi-terrain off-road platform. The vehicle made its global debut in April 2025 and was launched in the Chinese market in November of the same year, with plug-in hybrid variants priced between RMB 189,900 and RMB 249,900. Nissan holds a leading position in Mexico, capturing an 18.2% market share in 2025—the highest in the country—and contributing approximately 10% of its global sales volume. However, its current product lineup in Mexico consists primarily of gasoline and conventional hybrid vehicles, with limited presence in the plug-in hybrid segment. In contrast, BYD shipped over 116,000 units in Mexico from January to November 2025, accounting for roughly 70% of the local electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle market. By leveraging China’s mature plug-in hybrid technology and cost-efficiency advantages, Nissan can directly export China-made models overseas—filling a gap in its product portfolio while avoiding the high costs associated with developing new models from scratch. Additionally, starting January 2026, Mexico will impose an additional tariff of up to 50% on imports from countries without a free trade agreement (including China). However, because Nissan meets local production thresholds in Mexico, it qualifies for preferential treatment, allowing its China-sourced vehicles to enter duty-free under this new tariff—a significant advantage over other Chinese brands. Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa stated that annual exports from China are expected to gradually increase to 300,000 units, with plans to expand export destinations to include the Philippines, the Middle East, and other regions.
